The St. John Tigers will face Hoisington Friday's semi-final round in Larned's Keady Classic with a 55-26 win over the Ellinwood Eagles, Tuesday.
The Tigers took control of the game early hitting 17 points in the first quarter while holding Ellinwood to on eight. In the second they stacked on another 14 while the Eagles could muster only two points for a 31-10 lead at the break.
"Our guys really guarded hard," said Tiger head coach Clint Kinnamon. "On nights like we had shooting the ball, we are going to have to try and stay in games by doing what we did defensively. We were able to keep them under 20 points for the game until the last for minutes of the game, so I was pleased with that."
The Tigers struggled a little in shooting percent hitting only 36 percent, 41 percent from inside. Free throw percent was up making 6 of only nine trips for 67 percent from the line.
"Ellinwood had decent athletes out on the court and they played very hard," Kinnamon said. "It was good for us to play against a team that fought back like they did.
"Hoisington on Friday will bring a different breed of cat to the table. Cody Stetler has signed early to play D-2 ball in Houston and his size alone will be a nice challenge for our guys. We will have to continue guarding and make more shots than we did against Ellinwood to come out with the win. I'm certain our guys will be juiced for the opportunity to play a ranked 3A team."
St. John will tip off against Hoisington at 4 p.m., Friday in the early game. Winner of that game will advance to the finals at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Lady Tigers also advanced with a win over Ellinwood. See Ragan's Roost in our Local Blog section for more on area basketball.
