Just a few days after defeating Kiowa County in the Keady Classic, the Macksville Mustangs had the tables turned on them in a tight two-point contest in Greensburg falling 61-59 to the Mavericks.
It was a slow start for the Stangs with only Jordan Welch and Adolfo Ibarra finding the basket for two in the early going. Ibarra, Welch and Tanner Tranbarger each picked up the first of two from the foul line for seven points, but the Mavericks charged out doubling that score with 14 points.
Before the break the Mustangs reeled the Mavericks in a bit with a pair of deuces from Tranbarger a three from Hugo Flores and anther deuce from Ibarra and Kaden Herman. Ibarra hit 3-4 from the line.
At the half, the Mavericks led by three at 24-21
“We played hard to get back in the game,” said Mustang coach Jeff Kuckelman. “We just did not play well enough the whole game to get the win.”
After the break Tranbarger started heating up hitting a pair of deuces and a three-pointer in the third. In the fourth he added six more two-pointers and went 2-2 from the line for a 26-point game.
Welch came on late hitting the second of a two fer from the line, a deuce and a trey in the fourth. Ibarra added a pair of two-pointers and 1-4 from the line.
Greensburg hit 16 in the third and 21 in the fourth for the 61-59 final.
“I was proud of how hard we fought when we could have just given up,” said Kuckelman. “We just need to get over the hump and find ways to win those games.
“We need to just keep working on getting better as we will need to be with our league schedule right around the corner.”
