The Stafford County Fire department is giving county residents a first alert by providing free smoke detectors for their homes.

Assistant Fire Chief T.J. Rockenbach said the county acquired several home smoke detectors through a grant they received, and while they have installed some, there are still several available.

“The response hasn’t been as good as we had hoped so we are trying to get the word out,” he said.

“We not only give it to them at no charge, we will come and install it for them as well.”

There are no special requirements to obtain one on the smoke detectors. Persons interested need only call the Stafford County Fire and EMS building at 620-549-3765.

Rockenbach said persons requesting the detectors do not have to live in town they are available for any residents of Stafford County.
