The Cat in the Hat - Now whatcha think about that, Salina:  Saturday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.  Dr. Seuss’  Cat in the Hat is making a special appearance at the Central Mall in Salina to promote his new show, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, which begins airing on Smoky Hills Public Television Sept. 6 at 7:30 a.m. This event will have special screenings of the show and each screening is followed by a visit with The Cat himself, activity handouts, give-aways and a prize drawing. FREE!

32nd Annual Big Benefit Auction, BCC Foundation, Great Bend:  Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Highland Hotel. It’s a “Night in Napa” beginning at 6 p.m. with Silent Auction; Live Auction begins at 8 p.m. and auction proceeds go to BCC academic scholarships and programs enhancements for the 2011-2012 year.  Call Darnell Holopirek at 620-792-9367 for more info.

It’s SOCCER time in St. John:  Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. is the absolute final deadline to get on board with the Fall Soccer 4 on 4 League. For girls and boys ages 3 through grade 6, the games will be played in Stafford, Sylvia, Macksville and at Cornwell Park in St. John with the first game Sept. 18. Stop by the SJRC office at the Witt Center and get yourself ready for some soccer!

Calling all girls for the Volleyball team, St. John:  Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. is the absolute final deadline to get girls in 4th through 6th grade registered for this league. First game is Sept. 20 and they’ll be played in Stafford, Macksville and St. John. Registration forms are at the SJRC office - Witt Center - and T-shirts will be provided upon payment.

Ag Appreciation Day, St. John:  Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 804 E. First (Behind the Farm Service Agency building), the Stafford County Conservation District wants to show their appreciate to YOU! Enjoy a great meal of hamburgers and all the trimmings while you get to mingle with the conservation district board members and staff; get info about program availability and cost share program, too.  Don’t be late!

Ride for the Red, Pratt:  It’s the annual charity poker run on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Cannonball Trail American Red Cross Ride goes on whether rain or shine. Comfort Suites at 704 Allison Lane is where it starts at 8 a.m. with breakfast and registration. The run begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. back at the  Comfort Suites.  Grand prize is $500 for poker hand and there’s a suggested donation ticket drawing for $1,000! 32nd Annual Wildflower Weekend, Great Bend:  Friday thru Sunday, Sept. 17-19, the Kansas Native Plant Society hosts its 32nd Annual Wildflower Weekend. The thee for this year is “Wetlands, Wildflowers and Wildlife” and this meeting is a great opportunity to visit two of the most significant wetland complexes in all of North American right here in our own backyard: Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Visits to other prairies are also being planned.

37th Annual Hansen Arts & Crafts Fair, Logan:  Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Hansen Museum on Main Street in Hansen, you’ll experience one of the best meccas for shoppers anywhere. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. you’ll have crafters and artists featuring jewelry, fiber handicrafts, wooden items, paintings, floral arrangements, stained class and a lot more. There’s tons of food from hamburgers to home made turkey and noodles to churned ice cream to bierocks to sno cones.

Children will be kept busy with an enchanted castle, a 22’ slide and obstacle course. Got a turtle? Bring it for the turtle races. There’s also an egg toss and a sand pile scavenger hunt.
