Smoky Hills Public Television, Bunker Hill, has selected eleven local area winners of the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, with three of the eleven in Stafford County.

Anna and Jacob Suiter, both of Macksville, and Trey Fisher, St. John were chosen as winners in their categories. Anna, a first grader, won third. Jacob claimed first in the third grade division, and Trey represented the second grade with a third place pick.

PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest encourages children grades K-3 in communities across the country to celebrate the power of writing and illustrating by submitting their own original storybooks.

The winners were chosen from among 113 entrants.  Local winners receive a trophy, a "Word Girl" DVD, and a "Martha Speaks" book.

“I enjoy surprising the kids at the schools and encouraging the students to write,” said Smoky Hills Public Television’s Education Director Leona Breeden. “The smiles on the winners’ faces are priceless.”

Smoky Hills Public Television was one of 87 public television stations participating in this year’s Contest, which was designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning.

Contest entries are first judged at the local level, after which local winners advance to the national competition where a panel of renowned judges is currently identifying the national winners.

National winners will be announced and prizes, including laptops, digital cameras and MP3 players, will be awarded in July.
