The Tigers head into the Mid-Winter Classic posting a nice, 67-41, win over the Larned Indians – another tournament team – in Friday’s final game before the Classic.
“We played pretty well against Larned on Friday, except for about a four-minute stretch,” said Tiger coach Clint Kinnamon. “We got the lead pushed out over 30 and quit defending. Defensively, except for that time span we guarded as well as we had all season.”
With the exception of the 20-point third quarter the Tigers held Larned to only 21 points.
The Tigers started with a nice first period lead hitting 16 points while holding Larned to only six.
Kade Kinnamon got on track early from the outside sinking a pair of three pointers. A pair from the foul line gave the sophomore an eight-point night.
Four Tigers broke into double digits on offense with Esai Macias leading the scoring with 12 points. Macias consistently sunk the inside shot scoring early in the first with another in the third and a pair of two-pointers in the second and fourth periods.
Spreading the scoring around, Zuriel Reyes hit 11 points going 2-2 from the line in the first, then punching in three deuces and a trey after the break.
Spencer Nusser and freshman Dean Wade matched with 10 points each. Nusser hit two from the three-point range in the second and punctuated it with a pair of deuces in the fourth. Wade went an impressive 6-6 from the line and a pair from the field.
“It was good to see us shoot a more normal percentage from the floor,” Kinnamon said. “We shot it so poorly against Ellinwood on Tuesday, I though we might be better and we were. We went 7-15 from three, which is a lot closer to our season average than the 28 percent we shot Tuesday from three.
“I thought several guys had good games. Kinser (Crissman) had good production - ending up with seven assists. Dean got some good conditioning in and shot it well from the line. Esai played well shooting 6-9. Kade was steady again being over 50 percent from three. Spencer played pretty well also. Was great to see better balance. We had four guys in double figures with two more at 8 and 7. That is much better than having one guy going for 25.”
Larned added eight points in the second while the Tigers racked up another 22 for a commanding 38-14 lead at the break.
Larned made a good comeback run in the third hitting 20 points with a flurry of two-pointers from Cameron Brown and a pair of three-pointers from Jamil Shoemaker. The Tigers held them off with 13 points in the third and sixteen in the fourth holding the Indians to only seven for the 67-14 final.
The 6-3 Tigers start Mid-Winter Classic play Tuesday against Nickerson in the lead off game at 6:30. Now 1-8, Larned will face the tournament’s number one seed Medicine Lodge (9-0) in the 8:30 game.
“Nickerson is so well coached and disciplined,” Kinnamon said. “We will have to guard well and make some baskets to beat them. Medicine Lodge is huge, starting 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, 6-5. They are a little slower, but pretty good. Good ranked 2A team.
