There is something that has eluded one of the top athletes on the Remington High School track and field team: a state title.

Garet Johnson has been to state three times, earning a medal last spring. He is the top returning male athlete on the team — and he and his coaches have a goal.

“He is a three-time state qualifier in shot put, will look to finally get that elusive state championship,” wrote coach John Bumm in a season outlook for the team.

Johnson had the top shotput throw in class 3A last season, setting a season best at 53 feet, 1.5 inches. He faltered a bit at state, but with that throw he is a leader in the event. He has taken 13th, sixth and fourth in the event in his career.

He has a heavy load to carry, as he is the only returning state qualifier for the Bronco boys this spring. He will also run the 100 meters. The boys finished eighth in the conference last year, 10th at regional.

The girls side of the ledger finds just one state qualifier back from a team that finished eighth in the conference. Junior Sienna Schmidt looks to make a return trip to state in distance events; last year she finished 5th in both the 1600 and 3200 in a very competitive Cimarron Regional.

Junior Hope Thiel also just missed out on a state berth in the 300 hurdles last year, finishing fifth. Mikayla Johnson, another junior, will anchor the middle distance events for the Broncos, and will be pushed by senior Audria Thompson. Senior Jenn Smithhart will lead the jumpers, and sophomore Bella Artman should have a strong year throwing.

The team will start the season March 31 at Oxford.
