The Lady Mustangs were able to defeat the St. John-Hudson Tigers but lose in tie-breaker.
In their second match in the CPL Tournament held at Claflin last Saturday, the Macksville Lady Stangs defeated the St. John-Hudson Lady Tigers in three sets 25-20, 9-25 and 26-24. And starting out against the Otis Bison Cougars, the Stangs lost a close one 17-25, 25-23 and 21-25.
The Macksville Ladies played some good ball in the set against the Tigers, quickly covering the floor, and commuting to each other that helped prevent some miscues.
The Lady Stangs started out on the right foot, leading 4-1. They kept their lead for the entire set. The closes the Tigers got was two points, 4-2, 5-2, 7-5, 8-6, 12-10, 13-11, 16-14 until the score was within one 16-15.
The Stangs widened their lead by eight, 23-15 and 24-16. It took four set points for Macksville to win the first set, as the Lady Tigers narrowed the score 24-20. Macksville takes the last volley and wins the first set 25-20.
The second set was all St. John’s, the Lady Stangs take a 9-25 loss.
Until the score was knotted at 6-6, the Tigers were ahead except for the first two volleys. After another tie (7-7), the Stangs took a slim lead. From then on it was a game of ties 17-17, 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, 22-22, 23-23, and 24-24. The Lady Stangs take the last two volleys to clinch the third set 26-24 and the match.
After the match, it was a game of “What if’s”. With a three-way tie in Mackville’s, St. John’s and Otis Bison’s Pool, the tie was broken by which team had the widest margin of wining. Unfortunately for the Lady Stangs, their second set loss against the Tigers was the clincher, putting the Tigers in the top Pool, Otis Bison in the runner-up Pool and the Stangs in the bottom Pool.
The bottom Pool was made up of Macksville, Victoria and Kinsley, their matches played at Bushton. Victoria defeated Macksville 16-25, 21-25. Kinsley defeated Macksville 25-18, 16-25, 19-25.
Earlier that Tuesday at home, the Stangs lost to La Crosse 23-25, 22-25, and lost to Victoria 17-25, 22-25.
