The St. John Cross Country boys and girls teams both captured first place at the League Meet.

The St. John High School cross country team travelled to Coldwater to compete in the South Central Invitational and Central Prairie League meet. The Invitational was held at the Coldwater Country Club and is a combined meet with teams from both the Central Prairie League and the SPAA Iroquois League. Course conditions were tough with a rough course and warm, windy conditions, but it didn’t seem to slow down St. John as both the boys’ and girls’ teams claimed league championships.

The Varsity Boys’ team won the overall Invitational meet and also claimed their 4th straight Central Prairie League championship. A.J. Miller and Quincy Smith led the way for the Tigers claiming 1st and 2nd place overall and in the league. A.J. ran a time of 18:35.05 and Quincy ran a time of 18:54.03. Wrangler Walker finished 6th (3rd CPL)(19:17.04), Braden Witt 11th (7th CPL)(19:41.01), Hunter Hanson 13th (8th CPL) (19:44.07), and Trey Fisher 14th (9th CPL)(19:53.09). “It was a tough day to run, and we had a few guys who had to fight through some injuries and illness. I was pleased with the way they competed and that all six got in the top 20. The team is excited to get into regional week,” said Coach Joel Delp.

The Varsity Girls’ team claimed the Central Prairie League title. Atarah Walker (26:34.0) led the way finishing 29th in the Invitational and 8th in the league. She was followed closely by Paige Doran (26:40.02) in 30th and 9th in the league. Jaden Reed finished 40th (12th CPL)(28:59.04) and Shayla Garcia finished 49th (16th CPL) (31:19.04). “Conditions were tough and there were several girls in the race that were unable to finish. I was proud of our girls and the way they fought through the conditions and some pain to win. The girls are excited to start regional week,” Delp said.

The Junior Varsity Boys’ had a strong showing claiming the first five spots in the race. Uriel Calleros won the race with a time of 20:11.8 (1st)(1st CPL) He was followed by Dylan Reed 2nd (2nd CPL)(21:47.3), Luke Mercer 3rd (3rd CPL)(22:22.2), Edwin Fernandez 4th (4th CPL)(23:10.6), Chase Fisher 5th (5th CPL) (23:15.8) and Ethan Huston 7th (6th CPL)(24:41.3). “I was proud of our JV boys. They push the varsity group every week in practice and have had a great season,” Delp said.

The team will compete in the 1A Regional Cross Country meet hosted by Wichita East at the Cessna Activities Center Saturday, October 21st. The girls’ team will race at 12:05 and the boys’ team will race at 12:45.
