The Macksville Mustangs tackled the Attica/Argonia Titans with a 42-22 victory.
In last week’s paper, it said that if the Macksville Mustangs defeated the Attica/Argonia Titans, they would be heading to the playoffs. That was incorrect. The Mustangs have one more hurdle to jump over going up against the Fairfield Falcons.
The game against the Titans was a complete turn-around from last year’s game. This time the Mustangs came out on top with a 42-22 victory. This was one of the few games that the Mustangs had to go the distance, while most were called at the half or in the third quarter.
Both teams fought it out in the first quarter, the score 6-6. The second quarter was all Macksville as they added two touchdowns, making the score 22-6 at the half. The Mustangs momentum kept on going into the third as they scored two more touchdowns. Macksville leads 26 - 6. The Titans narrowed their lead some, scoring two touchdowns, but that was tempered by the Mustangs last touchdown. Macksville defeats the Titans 42-22.
More of the action went on the ground as all six of the Mustangs touchdowns came that way, five of them coming from Jacob Rein. The other touchdown came from Macksville’s quarterback Kody Mead.
Yards passing wasn’t as much of a factor this time as Mead was 3/9 in completions.
Yards rushing: That was the big difference as Rein carried the ball 18 times for 208 yards, his longest for 67 yards. Luis Saenz was next in line with 19 carries for 72 yards, his longest 13 yards. Mead came in third with nine carries for 47 yards, his longest 12 yards. And Harley Blaske had one carry for seven yards.
Receiving: Rein had two receptions for 31 yards. Karson Waters had one reception for four yards.
Kaleb Lickiss and Rein each snagged an interception.
Points scored: Mead six points. Rein 30 points.
Total yards for the Mustangs was 369 yards.
Tackles made: Harley Blaske five tackles (8 assists), Nate Brandyberry six tackles (2 assists), Lickiss four tackles (3 assists), Saenz three tackles (5 assists), Kreed Parr four tackles (1 assists), Waters four tackles, Rein three tackles (2 assists), Mead one tackle (4 assists), and Zane Johnson (2 assists).
"Tonight's game was a key game for our players and our season” said Macksville’s head coach Chet Skinner. “Attica/Argonia is a very well coached team with a lot of speed. This game last season was one that still hurts to think about. They came out and put it on us last year, beat us in all three phases of the game. This year was completely different. We came out ready to battle. Our running game has gotten better over the last four weeks and it showed tonight. The boys came out ready to play on defense, stopped a solid running game. With the win tonight, it gets us one game closer to having the opportunity to make the playoffs for the first time in six years. We look forward to finishing up the season with Fairfield and seeing where things go.”
The Fairfield game will be at home this Thursday on Parents Night. Game time is 7 p.m.
