The St. John Tiger boys are Regional Cross Country Champions.
The St. John Cross Country team competed at the 1A Cross Country Regional hosted by Wichita East on Saturday. The regional is one of three regionals at the 1A level. The meet was run at the Cessna Activity Center in Wichita. The course included some rolling hills and was very windy.
Seven teams and 56 runners competed in the boys’ race. St. John placed all seven runners in the top 13 to win the regional with a team score of 16 and to earn their third straight trip to the state championship. South Central was the runner up with a score of 71. The Tiger team was led by Mason Osborne with a 2nd place finish and a new personal record time of 18:09.07. A.J. Miller was 3rd (18:18.79), Wrangler Walker 5th (18:38.81), Quincy Smith 6th (18:39.02), Hunter Hanson 10th (18:59.70), Trey Fisher 12th (19:06.04) and Braden Witt 13th (19:06.31). “I was happy with the way our boys competed today. They have invested a lot of time and effort to get to this point. We are excited to get our legs under us this week and to make another trip to state,” said Coach Joel Delp.
The St. John girl’s competed against 42 other individuals in their race. Atarah Walker finished in 14th place with a personal record time of 24:56.33 qualifying her for the state meet. Jaden Reed finished in 25th place with a personal record time of 26:35.77. Leslie Ramirez finished in 31st place with a time of 27:27.39. “Our girls ran very well today. Atarah was able to PR and qualify for state as an individual. Jaden ran a PR time and despite being banged up Leslie finished strong. I was very pleased with their effort,” Delp said.
The team will travel to the Wamego Country Club in Wamego Saturday for the 1A State Cross Country meet. The girls run at 11:10 and the boys run at 12:55.
