The St. John boys Cross Country team are runners-up in the State Cross Country meet.

For the third year in a row, the St. John Tiger Cross Country team traveled to Wamego for the State Cross Country Championships. The races were held at the Wamego Country Club on October 28, 2017. The meet has a great atmosphere with crowds of people watching and lining the route. The course is very challenging with runners either climbing or descending hills the whole race. Wind was light and the temperatures were in the 40’s. A large group of St. John supporters were there to cheer on the Tigers.

In the 1A Girls’ race, freshman Atarah Walker competed as an individual against 84 other runners. Atarah placed 34th and ran a personal best time of 23:57.10 on the most challenging course she has faced. “Atarah did a great job getting out early in the race and attacking the hills. I thought she did very good for her first time to compete at state and on this course. I think Atarah found out what she is capable of, and I am excited to see her pick up where she left off next year”. Coach Delp

The Tiger Boys team faced some very tough competition in the 1A Boys’ race, but were able to run some of the best races of their career to secure a state runner-up finish. The boys competed against 11 other teams and 91 runners. Sophomore A.J. Miller earned a 10th place medal with a time of 17:47.52. He ran his second fastest time of the year and his fastest time on the Wamego course. Junior Mason Osborne earned a 12th place medal with a time of 18:05.15. His time was a new personal record time. Senior Quincy Smith earned a 14th place medal with a time of 18:10.51. He ran his second fastest time of the year and his fastest time on the Wamego course. Junior Wrangler Walker earned a 16th place medal with a time of 18:13.50. His time was a new personal record. Senior Braden Witt placed 21st with a time of 18:18.70. He ran his second fastest time of the year and his fastest on the Wamego course. Junior Hunter Hanson placed 33rd with a time of 18:49.75. He ran his second fastest time of the year in his first Wamego race. Sophomore Trey Fisher placed 46th with a time of 19:24.17. He ran his fastest time on the Wamego course. “We knew going in that St. John’s–Beloit was very fast and that they would be very difficult to beat. Our goal was to run our best races and to bring home a lot of hardware, and we accomplished that. Every one of our guys ran the fastest they had run on the Wamego course and some of their fastest times of the year. To run those types of times on this difficult course is a great accomplishment. I am very proud of the way our boys ran and competed this season. Winning seven meets, winning Regionals and finishing as the state runner-up is quite a feat. We are really going to miss our seniors Quincy Smith, Braden Witt, Chase Fisher and Luke Mercer next year. They were not only great runners but outstanding leaders on our team. We have a lot of great runners coming back next year, and I know they are excited to get back to work again.” Coach Delp

“Our boys’ and girls’ teams have had a great season. I am proud of the kids we have on our cross country team. They are outstanding individuals, who are willing to work hard, and they do a great job of representing their school and community. We greatly appreciate all of the support that we have received from our parents, school and community this season.” Coach Delp
