McPHERSON — The Bethel College softball team suffered a rough start on the first day of play at the McPherson Invitational.

Bethel fell to the College of Saint Mary 8-3, 15th-ranked (NAIA) Morningside 5-2 and Doane 3-2.

Against Saint Mary, Bethel trailed 5-0 after the first two innings. The Threshers scored in the bottom of the third. The Flames added three runs in the top of the seventh. Bethel came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Nicki Larsen threw a complete game for CSM to get the win, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Raegan Beckley took the loss for Bethel, allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Riley Scudder finished the game, allowing three runs with four hits and two strikeouts.

Brittney Banks led Saint Mary with two hits and three RBIs. Alicia Baca went two for three with an RBI.

Madison McDowell went two for four for Bethel. Michelle Schrag went two for three. Katie Schrag drove in two runs.

CSM snapped a six-game losing streak, improving to 2-6 after a win over Friends in its following game.

Morningside beat Bethel for the second time this season.

The Mustangs took control with four runs in the second inning and another in the fourth. Bethel scored both runs in the sixth inning.

Paige Lansink went 5.1 innings for the win, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Andrea Medinger finished the game for the save, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

McDowell took the loss for Bethel, lasting just nine batters and allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout. Alix Gallop went 2.1 innings, allowing a run on three hits with four walks. Baileigh Rager finished the game, striking out four.

Tracey Edwards led 8-5 Morningside at the plate, going three for four with an RBI. Lexi Stolen went two for three with an RBI.

McDowell went two for four hitting for Bethel. Sydney Harper and Emalee Overbay each drove in a run.

Against Doane, Bethel gave up a run in each of the first three innings. Bethel scored two runs in the fourth, but failed to tie the game.

Doane, 12-7, avenges a 12-8 loss to the Threshers from earlier this year.

Hannah Feagler went 3.2 innings for the win for Doane, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Haileigh Arthur finished the game for the save, allowing three hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

Scydder took the loss for Bethel, allowing one earned run on seven hits with two strikeouts. Rager finished the game, allowing two hits with two walks.

Ashley Meyer went two for two for Doane with an RBI. Kailyn Wiseman also drove in a run. Hailey Kennedy went two for three hitting.

Jordan Hill went two for four hitting for Bethel, driving in both Thresher runs. Leslie Hoffman went two for four.

Bethel falls to 7-10 and finishes play in the tournament today against Hastings at 11 a.m. and Langston at 1 p.m.
