A former volunteer firefighter was arrested Wednesday in connection with setting recent grass fires that he then helped extinguish, authorities said Thursday.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse identified the man as Jacob Kenneth Grant, 27, of Delia.

Morse said Grant was arrested Wednesday evening after an investigation into numerous suspected arson grass fires that occurred between Feb. 28 and March 10 in southwestern Jackson County.

Morse said Grant is suspected of setting the fires, then responding to many of them with the Delia Fire Department.

Grant was being held in the Jackson County Jail in connection with 13 counts of arson. His bond hadn't been set as of early Thursday.
