Tommy Williams, chief instructor and owner of American Karate and Martial Science, will host a free self-defense workshop for women on April 28 at his business.

The workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 526B E. Fourth Ave.

Williams said has been putting on the event annually since 1991, and for the past five years, twice a year, in April for Crime Victims Month and October during Domestic Violence month.

One of his senior black belts who started in one of those workshops 25 years ago continues to train and assist him with these classes. Williams has been involved in the martial arts for more than 45 years and instructing for 30 years. He is a former Master Level Defensive Tactics Instructor with the Kansas Department of Corrections and certified instructor under the Department of Justice.
