Hutchinson police arrested a car full of teens from the Lawrence area after they crashed into a light pole in Hutchinson early Sunday morning.

The four included a 16-year-old, a 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds, one of whom was from Topeka and rest with Lawrence addresses.

Besides crashing the 2013 Ford Edge – which was reported stolen from Lawrence – at the northeast corner of First Avenue and Madison about 6:15 a.m., police discovered suspected marijuana and alcohol in the car.

All four of the teens fled the scene, but officers quickly rounded up and detained them.

It was unclear what caused the car to hit the light pole, which snapped the pole off and likely totaled the stolen car, said Hutchinson Police Juvenile Division Detective Paul Sack.

“One of the teens said they’d been spinning kitties and going around curves fast earlier in the night, but it’s unclear if that’s what happened,” Sack said.

After the crash, the vehicle drove from the scene, but stopped in a backyard about two houses west of the corner, Sack said. All four teens were still in the car when an officer arrived on the scene, but then all four jumped out and ran, Sack said.

“There were an empty beer bottle and a small amount of marijuana,” Sack said. “Several smelled like alcohol, so they were all BAT’d (breath-alcohol tested) and all charged with illegal consumption.”

Despite possessing a vehicle stolen from Lawrence, Lawrence police indicated they would not come to pick up the teens, so they remain in Reno County Juvenile Detention.

One of the teens lived in Hutchinson “a few years ago,” and still had friends here, which might explain why they were in Hutchinson, Sack said.
