MAIZE — The Newton High School softball team was swept by Maize Tuesday in AV-CTL I play in Maize.
The Railers fell 16-1 in the first game and 13-1 in the second. The first game was called after four innings on the 15-run rule. The second game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.
In the first game, Maize scored nine runs in the first inning, a run in the third and six in the fourth. Newton scored in the fourth inning on a Mallory Seirer RBI double. Seirer finished with two of Newton’s three hits in the game.
Lauryn Ogden pitched for Maize to get the win, allowing three hits with five strikeouts. Megan Watkins took the loss, allowing 11 earned runs on 21 hits with a walk.
Savanna Hughes went four for four hitting with four RBIs. Sophia Buzzard went three for three with two RBIs. Sadie Ast went three for four with two RBIs. McKenzie Glass and Ogden each went two for four with two RBIs.
In the second game, Maize scored in every inning, breaking the game open with six runs in the second. Newton scored in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by C.J. Garcia, which broke the Eagle no-hitter.
Madi Arnold allowed a run, a hit, a strikeout and a walk for the win. Alex Llamas took the loss for Newton. Josie Bacon and Blazee Stahl also pitched.
Hughes went three for three hitting for Maize with two RBIs. Ast went two for three with two RBIs. Braeland Booth went two for two with an RBI. Devynn Ralle drove in two runs.
Maize improves to 11-0, 8-0 in AV-CTL I play. Newton drops to 0-14, 0-8 in AV-CTL I play. Newton plays at 4 p.m. Thursday at Salina South.
