The Newton High School baseball team is still trying to construct a complete doubleheader, splitting with Hutchinson Tuesday at Klein-Scott Field in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I play.
Newton won the first game 8-3, but lost the second game 7-6 after a late comeback fell short.
“In the first game, we did well on the mound,” Newton coach Mark George said. “We got ahead of hitters. We got some timely hits. We had loud outs. We played pretty good defense. We had good at bats. We had good approaches at the plate. In the second game, we did not take the same approaches we had in the first game. We chased pitches we shouldn’t have chased. We had too many strikeouts. We had opportunities to get outs that we didn’t take. Our pitchers got too far behind.”
In the first game. Christian Malcolm threw five innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Sport Tegethoff finished the game, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
A lead-off error in the top of the first led to a Salt Hawk run.
Newton used four hits and a dropped third strike to score four runs in the bottom of the first. Newton added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
Three singles and a walk led to a pair of Hutchinson runs in the top of the fifth. A 6-4-3 double play mitigated the damage in the inning.
Jace Maxwell led off the fifth inning with a home run to left field. A single and a walk followed, setting up a Kaden Davis RBI single.
Trenton Turner took the loss for Hutchinson. Ryan Cherry also pitched three innings.
Kaden Davis finished three for three hitting for Newton with two RBIs. Bryan Cusick went two for two with two RBIs. Warren Dietz finished two for three with three runs scored.
Korey Holmberg went two for three for Hutchinson with an RBI.
In the second game, Newton jumped out 2-0 in the first inning on a Maxwell sacrifice fly and a Bryan Cusick RBI single.
Hutchinson tied the game in the third inning on a Carson Biehler double and a Holmberg ground out for an RBI. In the fourth inning, Eastin Heneha drove in a run with a single and Biehler drove in a run with a double.
In the bottom of the fifth, Matt Seirer led off with a home run. Kaden Davis then singled and scored on an Alex Kern double.
With two outs in the sixth, Turner hit an RBI single for Hutchinson. Brody Smith hit an RBI triple in the top of the seventh and came home on a Marshall Sunner single.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Newton loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Dietz drew a walk to score a run. After a strikeout, a wild pitch got Newton within a run. A strikeout ended the rally and the game.
Brody Smith pitched 6.1 innings for the win, striking out seven. Landon Dimitt pitched the last two outs for the save.
Bryan Cusick took the loss for Newton. Kaden Davis and Tegethoff also pitched.
Dimitt went three for three hitting. Biehler and Sunner each went two for four. Dallas Chambers went two for three.
Kern was two for three for Newton. Davis was two for four.
Newton is 6-12, ending league play 3-9. Newton plays May 10 at Andover Central to end the regular season.
“I’d like to see us play to our potential,” George said. “I’d like to see us man up and be a little tougher. We haven’t put two good games together. I’d like to see us play 14 good innings. We haven’t done that yet.”
