SALINA — The Newton High School boys’ golf team posted one of its better scores of the season, taking fourth at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

In addition, the Railers claimed a pair of medalists who earned All-AV-CTL I honors for the season.

Salina South won the tourney at 313, followed by Salina Central at 325, Hutchinson at 328, Newton at 331, Maize at 332, Derby at 354 and Campus at 373.

Max Ontjes of Hutchinson claimed top medalist honors with a one-over par 71, four strokes better than Maize’s Jared Murphy. Parker Renz of Salina South was third at 76.

Newton was led by Zach Engelken, who finished fifth at 77 to earn first-team All-AV-CTL I honors. Erick Hernandez finished 11th at 82 for second team honors.

Hunter Lujano finished 15th, two strokes out of medal contention at 84.

Tanner DeGrado was 24th at 88.

Cale Lasiter finished 39th at 107 and Max Willingham finished 42nd at 115.

Newton will return to Salina Municipal for the Class 5A regionals with Salina Central, Salina South, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel, Andover, Wichita Heights and Valley Center. The top three teams advances to state May 21 at Dub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, Kan. The top five golfers not on the top three teams also advance to state.
