"Library Card Sign-Up" month at the Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library brings activities and events.
Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library is celebrating September as “Library Card Sign-Up” month and Librarian Laura Davis said Tuesday that a variety of activities are being planned.
“We’re inviting those who don’t have a card yet to come in and get one and those with cards to come in or call us at 620- 549-3227 to renew their cards,” Davis said.
Upcoming events include Tiger Tots Storytime at the Library at 10 a.m. tomorrow and Adult Paper Crafting class at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.
A four-week Book Club series will start September 18 at 7 p.m. to discuss “Soulful Simplicity” by Courtney Carver.
A theme of the book is how to pursue practical minimalism to create more with less.
Registration will be limited to 10 and will focus on reducing material possessions that “manage us,” Davis said.
Registration for the discussion series closes Tuesday, September 11. Phone registrations are accepted.
Davis said that September has been designated nationally as Library Sign-Up Month ‘to remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.”
Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning, according to Davis.
Davis categorized libraries as “America’s great information equalizers – the only place people of all ages and backgrounds can find and freely use such a diversity of resources, along with the expert guidance of librarians.”
The library is also supporting the 2nd Annual Community-Wide Garage Sale in St. John set for Saturday, October 13th, Davis said.
“Call the library by October 11th to have your address added at no cost to the master garage sale map,” Davis said. "Maps will be available in print and online starting October 12th.”
She invited Stafford County residents outside the city who wish to have a garage sale call or visit the library for an in-town location.
