Stafford County students from the South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative gifted program spent a day in St. John testing their mind and bodies with a trip to the Hood Museum, and tests of skills and creativity in the Philip Shell building.
The students exhibited their creative, and design skills building Mr. Potato Head scenes out of real potatoes and matching boxing of supplies.
“We had to use all the items in the box,” said Allison Lewther, Stafford.
With characters like Luke Sky-Potato, and Darth Cup, the Star Wars theme seemed the most popular choice, but Allison and her partners Julia Hall, Stafford, Julia Taylor, St. John, and Sophie Filbert, Macksville picked a different theme.
“We decided to go with the Stars and Stripes, because our potato looked like Abraham Lincoln,” she said.
In the morning, students tested their physical skills with tasks taken from the Popular television show “Minute to win it,” like removing all the Kleenex from a box using only one hand in less than a minute.
They rounded out the day with a trip through St. John’s Science Museum.
“The theme for the day was centered around problem solving,” said Tom Morris, one of the class sponsors. His wife Paula is the instructor. Becky Thrasher serves the group as a para-educator and Jodi Suiter helped out as a parent volunteer.
“We used to take a lot more trips, but with the current budget cuts we try to do more locally.”
