The St. John - Hudson school district partners with the Stafford district to provide the Parents as Teachers program.  The mission of this program is to provide parents with the information, support and encouragement needed to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.

The goals of the program include: 1) increasing parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices, 2) providing early detection of developmental delays and health issues, 3) preventing child abuse and neglect, and 4) increasing children's school readiness and school success.

The early years of a child's life are critical for optimal development and providing the foundation for success in school and in life.  Parents are their children's first and most influential teachers.  Identified and emerging research should be the basis of parent education and family support curricula, training, materials and services.  All young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of any demographic, geographic or economic considerations.  The Parents As Teachers program provides these opportunities.  Please contact the school district office at 549-3564 if you have questions about the Parents As Teachers program.

The recent spell of severe cold weather may have people thinking about the cost of heating their home.  Imagine the cost of heating a home that is twenty times larger than the average home.

That is the issue the school faces in keeping our students and staff warm in the winter months.

The district works to keep those costs down by participating in a program operated by the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB).  The program is called KJUMP.  KJUMP is the Kansas Joint Utility Management Program.  Many school districts, USD 350 included, have joined this consortium which saves money for member school districts by purchasing natural gas in bulk.  Savings are also created through consolidated auditing, payment, and invoicing.  Savings from this type of membership average from 15 - 20 % on heating costs.

Students in kindergarten through fourth grade will be presenting their annual Physical Education program on March 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the North Gym.  The theme of this year's program will be a variety show.  The students will be performing a variety of activities that will be coordinated to the farm theme.

USD 350 newsletters are available for download at www.usd350.com.  Those community members that Twitter are invited to follow the school district at stjohntigers.

Upcoming events:  Mar. 4 - 6 Sub-state Basketball Tournament, March 8 USD 350 School Board meeting (originally scheduled for March 1)

Thought for the week:  Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.
