David L. Samples, age 57, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at his home after a five year battle with colon cancer.  He was born May 7, 1953 in Herington, Ks., to Eugene and Connie Y. (Stitt) Samples.  He was a resident of St. John for 22 years, coming from Stafford.  A 1971 graduate of Stafford High School, he attended Fort Hays State University for one year.

He was a former brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad and for the last 35 years was a builder and designer employed by Samples Construction.  He was a member of the Stafford United Methodist Church, a former member of the United Transportation Union, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the St. John Zoning Board both at St. John.

On March 20, 1976 he married Marilyn K. (Postier) at Stafford, she survives.  Other survivors include: sons Nathan J. Samples, Stafford; Jesse R. Samples, St. John; parents, Hutchinson; sister Jo Dee Samples, Hutchinson; brother James Samples, Wichita; aunt Martha Outler, Metarie, LA; uncle, Charles Stitt, Kansas City, MO; one nephew, three nieces, one great nephew and three great nieces.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Ruth Samples; A.C. and Opal Stitt and by his mother and father in law, Delmer and Billie Postier.

Services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Minnis Chapel, St. John, with Pastor Roy Nelson presiding. Burial will be in the Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8pm at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas in care of Minnis Chapel.
