Kids will turn the birdhouse gourds grown in KWEC’s garden into homes for our fine feathered friends, make a feather bookmark, play games and of course, learn more about the world around them and the creatures living there. So don’t delay, sign-up soon, as the maximum for each class is 20 children.
Designed for children ages 6 thru 12, one-hour programs will be offered at no charge from 10 to 11 a.m. each Saturday. Children age 7 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Registration deadlines in sequential order of the classes are Feb. 1, Feb. 8 and Feb. 15. The maximum number per class is 20 children. Feb. 4: Feathered Frenzy - People find feathers fun and colorful but for birds they are essential for survival and flight, providing warmth, waterproofing and even a poisonous shield for some species. Discover what makes feathers special for birds and people, play a feather game or two and create a feather bookmark to take home.
Feb. 11: Winter’s Deep Sleep - From insects to mammals, animals have developed many ways to survive winter’s cold. Spend some time with a few of the critters from Cheyenne Bottoms, learn their winter secrets and make your own thirteen-lined ground squirrel - a super hibernator.
Feb. 18: Celebrate Birds! - Identify the birds that visit your winter yard, learn some fun facts, participate in the national Backyard Bird Count at the KWEC and decorate a gourd birdhouse to take home and attract your own backyard birds.
