St. John’s new chief of police resigned, after an extended special meeting of the city council, Tuesday.

Complaints and allegations from members of the city police force and some city officials culminated in a special meeting of the council that involved several executive sessions between council members, city clerk Johnna Stanford and each officer on the police force in individual meetings.

Neal said he resigned at the end of the meeting to put an end to the controversy that had become an issue making the position overly stressful on himself and his family.

Neal was hired in June to replace outgoing police chief Sonny Ralston, who is due to retire at the end of this month.

“I would like to thank Sonny and the citizens of St. John for the opportunity they gave me,” Neal said in a phone interview Tuesday. “I enjoyed my time in St. John and everybody I talked to seemed to very welcoming. I really appreciate the opportunity they gave me.”
Neal stated that he did not want to resign the position, but felt the council had already decided to fire him and he did not want to drag out the inevitable.

City officials have not yet released a public statement on the matter. Check back for more details as they become available.
