Accident west of Stafford claims life of Andover woman

STAFFORD- Stafford County emergency medical personnel responded to the scene of a two-vehicle accident west of Stafford, Friday afternoon that claimed the life of an Andover woman and sent the driver of a Frito Lay delivery truck to Wichita via air ambulance.

The accident occurred at 1:05 p.m., on U.S. Hwy 50 approximately two miles west of the town of Stafford.

Joann R. Romine, 67, of Andover was eastbound on Hwy 50 when she crossed the centerline in a 2001 Windstar Van. Romine struck a 2001 Workhorse delivery van driven Robert A. Smith, 47, of Isabel head on. The delivery truck entered the north ditch rolling once and coming to rest on its wheels.

Romine’s van slid to a stop at the intersection of SE 60 Avenue and Hwy 50. Romine was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith was transported to Stafford County Hospital and sent on to Wichita by air ambulance.

The accident closed U.S. Hwy 50 for four hours. Traffic was diverted around the accident scene on SE 40 Avenue and old highway 50 through the town of Stafford.
