Macksville’s city council took the first steps to demolishing some unfit structures last month publishing resolutions to tear down six structures in the community deemed uninhabitable.
“Most are falling down to the point nobody can live in them,” said Julie Bissell, Macksville city clerk.
“It would be hard to even get a clear title on most. There are back taxes, and we’ve been mowing some of them for years without getting paid for the mowing charges.”
The six structures slated for demolition are located at 204 S. Higgins, 408 N. Gilmore, 333 E. Poling, 118 W. Halveson, and 203 S. Higgins.
“The structure on Gilmore is a concern because the kids cut through there on the way to school and it is full of cats,” Bissell said. “We are worried about one of them getting rabies and someone getting bit.”
All the structures have been deemed unsafe or dangerous. The owners of the structures have 90 days from the date of publishing the resolutions to begin removing the structures and clearing the lots will do so and attach any costs to the property.
“I don’t think we will be able to get it done as quickly as St. John did on the ones they tore down recently, (because of costs,) but it would be nice,” said Bissell.
