The Macksville Mustangs move on to state play after a couple close wins defeating Haviland 49-43, Thursday and South Barber 36-33 on Saturday with two of their five starters on the bench due to injuries.

Marc Renfro and Evan Loomis were sidelined for the final game of the series, but the Mustangs still had a strong start against South Barber racking up 17 points in the first quarter with a three-pointer and a deuce from Adam Oak, a pair of two-pointers from Garrett Aves, and four from the inside by Derek Bevan.

“We really had to have some people step up with two of our starters out,” said Mustang head coach Jeff Kuckelman. “I really thought they did that well with some guys hitting some key shots and free throws. We never really got in a good rhythm offensively and part of that was due to missing some shots and them being very patient with their offense.”

Barber was patient with their offense waiting until the second quarter to really get their offense going. In the first they hit only six points but in the second Christian Johnston hit a pair of threes while Nick Morris sunk a three and went 4-5 from the foul line for a 14-point second quarter.

The Mustangs struggled in the second hitting only six points off two-pointers by Bevan and Seth Filbert with Bunker sticking 2-4 from the foul line. Setting the score at 23-20, Macksville favor at the break.
After the break it got worse.

“We were great in the first quarter, then we could not buy a bucket in the second, which caused us to have to scrap to get the win,” Kuckelman said.

In the third, the Mustangs blanked South Barber, but could only squeeze in one penalty shot from Bunker for the quarter’s only point.

With the score at 24-20, Barber tried for a comeback scoring 13 points off six two-pointers, but missed five opportunities from the line.

The Mustangs hit four from the field with Aves hitting two, Filbert and Bunker hit the other solo deuces. From the line, Macksville went 4-10 with Taylor Tranbarger hitting two and Bunker hitting the other two. For the final of 36-33.

“All opponents are tough at this time of the year,” said Kuckelman. “And South Barber was no different.

“Haviland came out and were very deliberate on offense and played good defense, and we did not respond very well. We fought back when we had to and that is what won the (Haviland) game for us.”

Bevan was the games top scorer against South barber hitting 10 points. Aves had eight, Bunker seven. On defense, Adam Oak led with 11 rebounds and two steals.

Against Haviland Loomis and Oak tied with 10 points each. Aves led in rebounds picking off 11.

The 20-3 Mustangs travel to Dodge City, Thursday, to face 14-9 Ingells. Game time is 7:30 p.m., at the Dodge City Civic Center.
