Louis Edward John, 88, of Columbus, Indiana, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at his home.
Mr. John was born Jan. 2, 1922, at St. John, the son of Dewey and Emma Thiemann John. He attended Southwestern College and Duke University.
He had worked as a RADAR engineer at Philco in Philadelphia where he met his wife, Mary Jean Gilman. They were married Oct. 27, 1945, and moved to Columbus in 1952. He had been employed with Arvin Industries, now ArvinMeritor, as an electrical engineer.
Mr. John greatly enjoyed music. He was the Drum Major for his high school band's National Championship success in 1939. He also served as President of the Southwestern College Glee Club, sang in Barbershop Quartets and played the clarinet in Columbus City Band.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, had served on the Boy Scout Committee, the Board of Trustees and sang in the Chancel Choir. He was a member of the Jaycees, the Retirement Foundation and Kiwanis Club. During his retirement he enjoyed playing golf, swimming at Foundation for Youth pool, and traveling.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Schaar officiating. Entombment will follow at Garland Brook Mausoleum. Friends may call at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street from 4 to 6 p. m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Surviving include his wife, Mary Jean Gilman John of Columbus; a daughter, Ruth Ann (Steve) Jones of Union Grove, Wis.; a son, William (Elizabeth) John of Pass Christian, Miss.; and grandchildren, Wes Jones of Dayton, Ohio, Kathryn (Clark) Satcher of Diamond Head, Miss., and Daniel John of Pass Christian, Miss.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
