April is Alcohol Awareness Month. Even though alcohol gets the least attention from media as a drug that can greatly damage young lives, alcohol is the drug of choice among American teens. Underage use is dangerous and costly, not only for users and their families but for all of us. The following facts were based on research from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
* Alcohol is the most frequently used drug by high school seniors. In a recent survey, 77% of students had consumed alcohol by the end of the 12th grade. By contrast, 51 % had tried an illicit drug.
* Alcohol is a factor in the four leading causes of death among 10-24 year olds: motor vehicle crashes, unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide.
* Due to heavy or binge drinking, nearly one out of every five teenagers (16%) has experienced black outs, after which they could not remember what happened the previous evening.
* More than 67% of young people who start drinking before the age of 15 will try an illicit drug. Children who drink are 50 times more likely to use cocaine than children who never drank.
* The typical American young person will see 100,000 beer commercials before he or she turns 18.
* About 88% of 10th graders and 75% of 8th graders report that it's very easy or fairly easy to get alcohol.
Be aware of the dangers of alcohol use by our young people. If you know of a young person who is abusing alcohol, contact the school nurse or counselor (Adapted from an article from the Region VII Comprehensive Center)
Friday, April 16, was originally scheduled as a professional development day for staff. This day has been rescheduled as a regular school day. Parents who may have made appointments or plans for their students on that day should contact the school office to advise them on whether your student will be in class on that day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Upcoming events: April 10 Jr. / Sr. Prom, April 17 and 18 Jr. / Sr. Play
Thought for the week: Spring inspires much wanderlust, a lot of gardening and a little bit of bad poetry. - Bern Williams
