The Macksville Mustangs advanced to the sub-state finals, Thursday, defeating the Ingalls Bulldogs 66-51 at Dodge City Civic Center.

The Mustangs ended the first quarter down by two at 15-17, but went on a tear in the second scoring 18 and holding Ingalls to only four points for a comfortable 33-21 lead at the half.

“We did a good job of settling down after the first quarter and really defended, and got rebounds the second quarter,” said Mustang coach Jeff Kuckelman. “Our big guys did a good job of attacking the rim both offensively and on the boards, which allowed us to build a lead.”

After the break, Macksville hit 14 points to the bulldogs 10 putting them up by 16 points at the end of three.

The fourth quarter was a free throw competition with Macksville shooting 11 of 16 attempts, and the Bulldogs going 9-13 in penalty shots.

“We relaxed too much when we got the lead and turned it over too much,” Kuckelman said. “We need to focus for four quarters to win from here on out.

Kyle Bunker led the team offensively with 21 points, Adam Oak had 16 with Garrett Aves scoring 15. The team shot 52 percent in the first half, 47 for the game.

Defensively Bunker and Aves tied with eight rebounds each. Derek Bevan had six.

The Mustangs (21-3) will play Quivira Heights (22-2), at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at Dodge City Civic Center for the sub-state title.
