Basketball fans clad in a rainbow of colors supporting their high school teams rolled into St. John Tuesday for the first in four days of high-caliber basketball action as the 44th Annual St. John Lions Club’s Mid-Winter Classic kicked off.

Known almost as much for its famous pie and concessions as the competition, this year’s tournament promises both with Wichita West stepping in to fill a void by Lyons that did not return to the tournament this year.

“The other side is as loaded a side as I have ever seen," said Tiger's head coach Clint Kinnamon before the tournament. Central Plains is playing pretty well, just coming off a big win against Victoria by 21. Macksville has three really solid seniors and are well coached, so they will be tough."

Macksville will face Central Plains in the 6:30 game. The Mustangs beat Central 64-50 in their previous meeting Jan. 6.

Kinnamon's Tigers lost in first round of the tournament 73-62 to Nickerson. They took on the Larned Indians at 4:45 today in the first consoliation bracket. THe Tigers won their earlier outing with the INdians on Friday.

"Pratt is very good," said Kinnamon. "Micah Swank is one of the best players in the area. They will probably have their hands full with Wichita West. They have been playing everyone in the city league close, with the exception of Heights, who is nationally ranked."

Pratt will face Wichita West in the 8:30 p.m. game tonight, (Thursday).

"There are any number of teams that potentially have chances to make the semi-finals and final. Should be a great week of hoops for people to come out and watch," he said.

Beside the coveted champion’s trophy schools  also compete for a Sportsmanship award given for team support, sportsmanship and participation. Support your teams by attending.
