St. John's Tigers basketball team won their first round game in Pratt's Tournament of Champions this Thursday, defeating Medicine Lodge 50-21, a game that had five Lady Tigers making at least one 3-pointer - seven three's in all (Jamie Waters 3, Tia Smith 1, Haley Falk 1, Morgan Osborne 1, and Teresa Wade 1).
St. John will be playing Wichita North's team at 8 pm. this Friday. North defeated Chaparral 79-32 and Wichita South earlier defeated Larned 36-22 in Thursday's other first round games.
In the TOC 3-point shooting competition, St. John's Teresa Wade made nine of her 15 three-point attempts. Jamie Waters made 5 of her 15 attemps. Wade also went 19-25 in the free throw contest and teammate Morgan Osborne went 17-25. The two contests will continue for the next two days until the winners are announced Saturday evening after the Championship game.
Other games of interest: Hutchinson Central Christian defeated Wichita's “Word of Life” 50-39. Jamie Patrick scored 36 for Central Christian. The Tigers will be playing “Word of Life” at home on Feb. 17th.
Spearville came from behind to nip South Central 48-47 in Dodge. South Central has now lost three games this year. They could wind up playing the Tigers for the substate championship.
