The Macksville Mustangs head into week 7 with a perfect 6-0 record as they travel to Greensburg to face the 3-3 Kiowa County Mavericks in their next district match up.
Macksville is coming off a 46-0, two quarter win over the Minneola Wildcats. Kiowa is coming off tough 44-22 loss to 5-1 Pretty Prairie.
The Mavericks had an up and down start to their season losing their season opener 32-6 to South Gray, then defeating Minneola 66-40 in the second week.
Week three was another loss falling 47-36 to Skyline, but they rebounded again defeating Fairfield 62-28. The Mavericks’ first back-to-back wins came in week five when they defeated South
Central 72-44 before losing last week to Pretty Prairie.
Known for some slow starting games, Kiowa’s coach Clint Young said his team seems to do better in the second half of the games.
“We see what they are doing when we do certain things,” he said. “We figure out what they are doing and make adjustments, then at halftime they are making adjusts to us.”
One adjustment Macksville will be making will be stopping quarterback Ross Binford. The 190-lb, 6’1” senior accounts for a large percentage of the team’s rushing yardage and through the air he has completed 14-47 attempts for 193 yards passing.
“They’ve got a quarterback that’s run for a lot of yards, hopefully we can slow him down,” said Mustang coach Jeff Kuckelman. “ We hope we can slow him down. I think it is probably impossible to stop him, but we’d like to be able to slow him down some to have a chance to win.”
Size in the trenches is in the Mavericks favor with senior lineman Lymon Morehead tipping the scales at 6’ 3”, 305 lbs., 270-lb defensive lineman Kabl Huffman, and others topping the scales at 185, 190, and 238 pounds.
The Mavs like their game on the ground. They have over 2570 yards rushing averaging over 400 yards per game. Through the air they are a bit more conservative with just over 200 yards on 18 completed passes on only 51 attempts.
Macksville comes in a little smaller up front, but are a very mobile team as their stats show.
The Stangs have 1137 yards passing with senior quarterback Seth Filbert tossing for all but 46 of those yards.
Filbert has a variety of targets for his 95 attempts.
Senior Adam Oak has 602 yards on 32 receptions for over 120 yards per game. Sophomore Tanner Tranbarger has been another favorite target picking up 18 receptions for 412 yards, while the senior Taylor Tranbarger has 77 on only five catches.

Oak leads the ground game with 363 yards on 47 carries averaging 72 yards per game. Filbert sits in second on ground yards with 233 yards on 58 carries for just under 50 yards per game.
Simon Miller rounds out the top three with 107 yards on 13 carries.
With the ball in their hands, the Mustangs are averaging 227 passing yards per game, and 150 rushing for about 51 points per game. With the ball in their opponents’ hands the Stangs average about 60 tackles and 1 and a half sacks a game.
The Mavericks are averaging 34 yards passing per game and a staggering 428 in rushing for 44 points per game. Defensively, they average about 61 tackles per game.
Macksville is currently ranked 12 in Kansas and looking forward to the back half of their season.
After their loss in Pretty Prairie, the Mavericks are looking forward to getting back to their home field.
“They’ve got (artificial) turf down there so it’ll be a little bit different,” Kuckelman said. “Our kids have played there before, most of the upper classmen played down there two years ago, I think our JV kids played there last year so they’re looking forward to playing on a nice field.”
