Philip D. England, 71, of McLouth and formerly of St. John and Winnebago, Minn., passed away Monday, January 18, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 20, 1938 at Greensburg, the son of Harold L. and Cleo D. Martin. He was married to Nancy L. Lamb on Dec. 16, 1959 at St. John, she survives the home.
England graduated from St. John High School and attended Kansas State University, Emporia State Teacher's College and graduated from Ottawa University. He started working at his father's grocery store, serving in several positions. Changing his career, he served as the Administrator at Hearthstone Nursing Center in St. John from 1978 until 1998. He moved to Winnebago where he served as Administrator of Parker Oaks Retirement Community until his retirement in 2003.
In 1998, England received the Administrator of the Year award and was inducted into the Winnebago Hall of Fame in 2004. Moving to McLouth in 2007, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of McLouth and was a former member of the First Baptist Church in both St. John and in Winnebago, serving as Deacon, church pianist and choir director for all three churches.
As a musician, he played numerous instruments and was a member of "The Brothers", a mens singing group in Winnebago and was also a member of the Winnebago area Musical Players Theater Group.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy L. England of the home; son Derick England and his wife Shelly of Abilene; daughter Shawnda Campbell and her husband Mitchel of McLouth; brothers Anthony England of Haysville and Cedric England of Salina; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Terry Lee England.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the First Baptist Church of McLouth.
Grave side committal services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Fairview Park Cemetery in St. John.
