OBITUARY: Walter E. Shain 1938 - 2012

Walter Edward Shain passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012, with family by his side, after a short illness, in Fenton, Missouri at the age of 73.  He was born on August 4, 1938, in Des Moines, Iowa, the only son of the late Paul M. Shain and Hazel (Battles) Shain. He received a BS degree in Forestry Management from Colorado State University. Walter served his country in the U.S. Army, joining in June 1960 and retiring as a full Colonel on August 4, 1998. He served in the Medical Service Corps across the country from Ft. Belvoir, Va., Ft. Richardson, Alaska, Anoka, Minn., Albuquerque, N.M.,  Wichita, and Ft. Riley, Kansas. He received his Masters degree in healthcare administration from the University of Minnesota and worked as a hospital administrator in healthcare most of his life. In his later years he worked as a healthcare consultant for healthcare design/build firms. He was accredited as LFACHE in American College of Healthcare Executives.

Swain comes from a Scouting family, four generations of Scouting, earning his Eagle as a youth and serving in BSA throughout his life. He earned his Wood Badge and was awarded the Silver Beaver during his scouting career. He assisted the next two generations of his family on the trail to Eagle, with seven sons and grandsons reaching Eagle. He was a member of the Methodist Church and served as Lay Leader and volunteer in El Dorado. He served as a school board member in El Dorado. Walt married Rita Bowden on January 1, 1983, at Ft. Riley, while serving in the Army. In October 1990 they moved to Gerald, Mo. and established Champion City Stables. Together they were breeders of performance and reigning horses, purebred Arabians and National Show Horses. They were successful in having two national championships in NSH Western Pleasure.

He is survived by his wife of twenty nine years, Rita Shain of the home; children include, Glenn Shain and wife Sue of Lenexa, Brent Shain and wife Mary of Hugo, Okla., Shaunalee Gish and husband Dr. Tracy of Lincoln, Neb., Denise Richard and husband Dave of Goddard,  Dr. Guy Shain and wife Kania of Eudora; 13 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; the mother of his first four children, Glenda Taylor of El Dorado,  step mother, Edna Shain of Vinton, Iowa; several cousins and a host of friends across the country from the military, healthcare, and horse breeders.

Graveside services for Walter E. Shain will be held on Tuesday, February 21, at 10 a.m. in the Jefferson City Cemetery, with full military honors.
