The University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association honored two St. John High School seniors on Thursday, February 9, at a dinner program at the Knights of Columbus facility in Larned.

Kansas Honor Scholars were Christa Milton, daughter of Ivan and Lisa Milton, and Billy Milton, son of Bill and Tammy Milton.  Superintendent James Kenworthy, Principal Mike Burgan, and Counselor Wendy Hacker also attended the ceremony along with the parents of the students.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971.  The program has honored over 134,000 students in the top ten percent of high school senior classes throughout the state of Kansas.  Community and alumni cooperation make the annual programs positive community events that focus attention on the students and the high schools for achievement in their most important endeavor-academics.

Congratulations to Christa and Billy on being named Kansas Honor Scholars.

The number of limited English student enrolled in public schools in the U.S. has been estimated to be over 5 million.

This makes up almost 10 percent of the total pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public school enrollment.  This estimate would mean the population of students who are English-language-learners has grown 105 percent in recent years.

States report more than 460 languages spoken by students with limited proficiency in English.  These numbers pose unique challenges for educators to ensure that language-minority students achieve to high levels under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

USD 350 has seen the number of English language learners almost double in the last five years.  Approximately half of USD 350 teachers are certified to provide for the special needs of limited English students.  This certification allows our teachers to provide better programming for our ESL students.  Please contact the USD 350 district office if you have questions about ESL services for students.

A reminder that St. John - Hudson boys' and girls' basketball teams have been assigned to the Coldwater-South Central Sub-state.  Other schools assigned to this sub-state include Coldwater-South Central, Ashland, LaCrosse, and Macksville.

A reminder that you can find information on activities on the district website: www.usd350.com.  You can also follow the Tigers on Facebook.com at: St. John - Hudson Tigers USD 350.  Those community members that Twitter are invited to follow the school district at stjohntigers.
