Here is a story about a truck, car and motorcycle.
A truck was coming into a small town with the motorcycle following. The highway went from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. The truck got into the right lane and slowed down to make a right turn into a truck stop. The motorcycle stayed in the left lane to proceed on its way.
The man on the motorcycle wasn't aware that in just a few seconds, his life was going to change forever.
There was a car leaving the truck stop and since he couldn't see the motorcycle on the other side of the truck, he pulled out into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.
Now we pray that the man on the motorcycle will have a speedy recovery. You may wonder why the driver of the car could be so irresponsible?
I would say it is a lack of training. How much training did you have when you got your drivers license? Not that much and if you look around, everyone has one.
How much training have you had since you received your drivers license? I would guess the answer is, none.
Every company that I have worked for since 1985, have stressed training and safety. The training for truck drivers started out with driver meetings to safety posters and safety letters in our paychecks.
SMX purchased a driving simulator for us to become a better drivers. It was mandatory for us drivers to watch 4 videos a year and then take a test on each one of them. If there is that much information for us truck drivers, how come people that drive cars don't know about it?
Is it that they don't care about safety?
Our police officers set some cones out on Main Street for me. Kansas Road Team Captain, Ken Minium, brought the Wal Mart, 53 foot No Zone trailer into town.
We would have been thrilled to have 10 people to stop by. We would have been happy to have 5 people to stop by.
When the night was done, not one person stopped so we could give a first hand demonstration on what we see and can't see.
I'm sure the driver of the car that pulled out in front of the motorcycle, thought he knew all there was to know about safety. He must have missed the part that says if you can't see around it, through it and behind it, don't pull out in front of it.
It is what we call No Zone and you don't have to be a truck driver to have one.
Do you think if that driver had a little more training and safety education, he could have prevented the accident?
If you said yes, we missed you on Main Street.
