HESSTON — Despite cool, damp conditions, scores were low Thursday at the 16-team Hesston Invitational at the Hesston Golf Course.

Mazie South topped the field with a team score of 295, seven strokes better than Wichita Trinity Academy. Andover Central was fourth at 311, followed by Valley Center at 317.

Host Hesston tied for sixth at 328. Newton was 12th at 361.

Wells Padget of Maize South was top medalist with a seven-under 64, six strokes better than Peyton Austin of Rose Hill. Jake Huffaker of Southeast of Saline was third at 71.

“It wasn’t my best, but I shot pretty well,” Padgett said. “I took advantage of the shortness of the course. I had a bunch of wedges in. I didn’t hit many putts outside of six feet, but I hit a bunch of birdie putts inside six feet. No bogeys today. Nothing special, just a lot of birdies. The rain wasn’t too bad.”

Padgett hasn’t lost a tournament this season. Maize South had its best team score of the year.

The top area finisher was Newton’s Tanner Pauls, who tied for 12th at 77, one stroke out of medal contention.

“I should have done better. It was my home course,” Tanner Pauls said. “I couldn’t make any putts. I made one putt outside of three feet all day. I hit the ball pretty well. I hit the ball pretty well. It wasn’t too bad out there. It started raining with two holes left. The wind picked up. Based off today, I need to putt a little better and get control of my irons.”

Hesston was led by Grant Brenneman at 79, Jordan Roth at 81, Tanner Bachman and Tyler Bachman each at 84, Dylan Prouty at 87, Kitt Regier and Landon Spencer each at 90, Trevor Koehn at 97, Tayler Stoppel at 102, Ben Roth at 104, Jacob Eilert at 106 and Jordan Carter at 110.

“I’m happy with the direction we’re going,” Hesston coach Grady Pauls said. “We started the year pretty shaky. The way our schedule is, it’s pretty tournament-loaded at the end of the year. I feel like the guys have done well in the last tournament or two. They are learning how to play in a tournament. I feel like we’re starting to move in the right direction. The weather wasn’t horrible, the course was in good shape and the scores reflected it. It’s fun to see low scores.”

Hesston plays Monday at the Southeast of Saline Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course, followed by the I-135 Classic Tuesday with 18 holes in Hesston and 18 holes at the Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

For Newton, Hunter Lujano shot an 84, followed by Erick Hernandez at 92, Hervey Medina at 108, Mason Rossiter at 109 and Max Willingham at 113.

“I know Tanner was disappointed because he bogeyed three of his last five holes and was one shot out of a medal again,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “I was happy with the score. Hunter broke 90 for the first time this year, shooting an 84. That was even with a triple (bogey). It seems like his best round of the year was 98, so that’s a 14-stroke improvement. Erick Hernandez had his best round. He shot a 92 and 97 was his best. We’re playing the Hutchinson Invitational tomorrow, so I didn’t have my no. 3 or no. 5. We brought up some kids who were part-time varsity and part-time JV. They are all improving, but they had too many big numbers. They shoot pars and shoot bogeys, but they still need better course management. Overall, this is probably our best team score. Everybody’s getting better.”

Newton competes today at the Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park.
