DERBY — The Newton High School boys’ golf team ended the regular season by tying for fifth Monday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships at the Derby Country Club.

Maize won the team title at 327, followed by Salina South at 337, Salina Central at 351, Hutchinson at 362, Derby at 363-94, Newton at 363-99 and Campus at 426.

Jared Murphy of Maize was the top medalist with a seven-over par 78, two strokes better than teammate Jacob Roth and Josh Reed of Salina South.

Newton’s Tanner Pauls fell into a three-way tie for ninth at 87, When tie-breakers were applied, he was awarded 10th, claiming All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League second-team honors.

Tanner DeGrado finished 18th at 89, two strokes out of medal contention. Hunter Lujano finished 21st at 91. Austin Lackey was 32nd at 96. Zach Engelken was 34th at 99.

“Tanner Pauls won 10th place medal and earned second-team all-league honors,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “Tanner DeGrado posted his best score of the season breaking 90 for the first time in a varsity meet. Hunter, Austin and Zach all came in below their season average. Erick (Hernandez) shot a 90, but signed for an incorrect score and was disqualified. The team would have finished fourth, but this dropped us to sixth. We have been shooting our best scores late in the season and are optimistic going into regionals.”

Newton competes in the Class 5A regional tournament at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Sand Creek Station. Valley Center, Salina Central, Salina South, Maize, Wichita Heights and Great Bend also will compete. The top three teams and top five players not on the top three teams advance to state May 22 at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
