Race fans were treated to some rough and tumble racing in the street stock class at Hutchinson Raceway Park, Friday, with St. John resident Scott Claussen claiming a first in the feature event.
The street stock class had enough entries for two heat race pitting Stafford County racers Jason Dove and Scott Claussen against each other in Heat two with Jimmy Brozek battling for a spot in the feature in heat one.
Brozek earned a spot in the feature winning his heat, but St. John racers Dove and Claussen had a tougher time getting to the final race.
Dove and Claussen battled with Derrick Oden and Brandon Miller in some tight racing in the second heat of the street stocks. The four evenly matched cars crowded each other for the same piece of track on several laps before some contact between Dove, Claussen and Miller put Claussen into a spin in turn one.
Dove won the heat with Greg Lynch finishing second. Claussen held on for third and a spot in the feature race. Miller was black-flagged for rough driving.
In the feature Dove and Brozek battled for position in the rear of the lead pack before a three car crash left Dove sandwich between two racers ripping the car’s rear quarter panel loose and damaging the steering controls which sidelined Dove for the rest of the night.
Claussen, who avoided the crash, worked his way up from the middle of the pack to chase Brad Duvall and Dustin Carey.
He moved into the lead in the final few laps claiming a first place win in the street stock feature.
Brozek finished fifth in the feature with Dove being credited for sixth.
Brozek’s sister Heather, a rookie in the hornet class, finished sixth in her heat, fifth in the feature, but maintains a third place standing in the overall points chase in the Hornets class.
Hutchinson Raceway Park has races every Friday night, except during Hutchinson Nationals at the fairgrounds. Racing starts at 7 p.m.
