The St. John Tigers boys pulled in a homecoming win with Zach Achor slamming away opponents shots to win 51-44 over the Knights of Victoria.
The Tigers came out shooting in the first half scoring 28 in the first half over Victoria’s 17.
Minnis hit a pair of deuces in the first two for 11 points on the night; Hilton hit a pair of threes and a deuce on his way to 14 points, but Achor claimed the hot hand on offense, and a good block on defense scoring 19 points and slamming away opponents blocked shots like a possessed man in a tether ball death match.
“Achor had a three-minute stretch where he was unreal,” said Tiger coach Clint Kinnamon. “He is getting better.”
Just before the half, Achor stretched out his 6’4” frame to fiercely slam away three blocked shots bringing the crowd and the Tiger bench to their feet.
After the break, the Knights made a comeback run at the Tigers scorings eight and holding St. John to eight.
“We didn't guard very well and missed some shots in the third quarter,” Kinnamon said. “We were pretty good in the first, second and fourth.”
Hilton hung in another three while Omar Herrera went 3-4 from the line for his only points on the night. The Tigers scored 15 in the fourth while LaCrosse added 10 to their tally.
Earlier in the week the Tigers defeated LaCrosse 55-52.
Hilton took home high points at 19 while Achor hit 17, and Herrera had 11.
The Tigers face Kinsley on Monday, Quivira Heights on Tuesday, and Macksville on Friday Feb. 19 in an away game and the final regular season game for both teams.
