Macksville stacked on another pair of wins defeating Kinsley 77-43, Tuesday and the Quivira Heights Thunderbirds 65-58 on Friday.

The Mustnags had their way with the Kinsley Coyotes, but Quivira’s Thunderbirds proved more of a challenge.

“We played pretty well in the first and fourth quarters, but did not in the second and third, which almost cost us the game,” said Mustnag coach Jeff Kuckelman.

Macksville hit 18 in the first period while holding Q Heights to 13 with a three-pointer from Marc Renfro, a triple from the field by Kyle Bunker, and three single two-pointers from Garrett Aves, Derek Bevan and Adam Oak. Evan Loomis went 1-2 from the line, but ended with 13 points off a trey and a deuce and 4-4 from the line in the fourth.

The Thunderbirds went on a scoring rampage in the second hitting 22 points to the Mustangs 7 for a half time score of Macksville 25, Quivira 35.

“We ended up out-rebounding them and shot free throws pretty well, which made a huge difference in the outcome,” said Kuckelman. “We kept battling and finall played a lot smarter, which helped us beat a good team.”

Against Kinsley, the Mustangs scored 68 points by the end of the third quarter shooting 66 percent from the field in the second half, 55 percent for the game.

“We really came out of half strong and took control of the game,” said Kuckelman. “We did a good job on the boards and took care of the ball.”

Renfro tied for game high on offense with Loomis hitting 13 points each. Bevan finished a close second with 12, as did Bunker.

The Mustangs traveled to Otis-Bison on Tuesday and face the St. John Tigers at home Friday for the final regular season game.
