Donald Glenn Ahnert 1925 - 2017
Donald Glenn Ahnert, 93, of Chandler, AZ died surrounded by loved ones on September 1, 2017 in his home at Corinthian House Assisted Living. Donald was born June 7, 1924 in Hudson, Kansas to Louis G. and Mary Schrader Ahnert. He graduated from Hudson High School. After high school, Don joined the Marine Corp and served from November 1944 to May 1946. He was part of the historic World War II Battle of Iwo Jima.
He married Mary Bell Yancey on June 3, 1946, in Great Bend. He worked in the oil fields for Johnston Testers and as a lathe operator at Corrosion Proof Fitting Company. In 1955 he moved his family of six to Grants, New Mexico and worked for Anaconda, a uranium mining company. While in KS and NM, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He hunted pheasants, rabbits, quail, ducks, geese, coyotes, deer, elk and bear. In 1965 he transferred to Tucson, Arizona running the conveyor belt system at the Anaconda Copper Mine. He worked there for sixteen years before retiring and moving to Beggs, OK. Several years later they returned to their beloved Kansas. Their passion was to be near the Ahnert/Schrader Family Farm in Hudson. After some health challenges, Don moved to Chandler, Arizona where he lived the last six years of his life.
Mr. Ahnert was a member of the Jolly Rancher 4-H Club and raised award winning hogs as a child. He had memberships at the Elks Club, the Masons, and the VFW. Mr. Ahnert was a member of Peace Church in Hudson, KS.
Survivors include his brother, Ross Ahnert of Kansas, two sons, Robert L Ahnert and wife Gail of Dennison, Texas and Ronald G. Ahnert and wife Uana, of Chandler, Arizona; a daughter, Dianna K. Ball and husband Roger of Mesa, Arizona; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, his son, Donald Joe, and his granddaughter, Jamie Lynne.
