GOESSEL — The Goessel High School track team returns three state qualifiers as well as a number of other letterwinners.
Curtis Guhr begins his 11th season as the head coach. He is assisted by Crysta Guhr, Joni Smith, Garrett Hiebert and Brian Lightner.
The Goessel girls were second in the Wheat State League last season, while the boys were seventh. The girls were 28th at state in Class 1A, moving up to Class 2A this season.
Returning state qualifiers include Brittney Hiebert (6th 800, 8th 4x800), Stephany Meyer (7th triple jump, SQ long jump, 200, 4x400) and Julia Nightengale (8th 4x800, SQ 3,200).
Other returning letterwinners for the girls include Kara Burkholder, Edel Miller, Megan Guerrero, Porclein Unruh and Elyse Boden. Returning for the boys include Jordan Griffin, Zach Zogleman, Zackary Guerrero, Jerah Schmidt and Jacob Hagewood.
“Strengths for the girls will be the individual events,” Curtis Guhr said.
“With bigger numbers this year we will also be looking to put several relays together that should compete well. With three returning state qualifiers, several letter winners, and some new faces, we are looking for the girls to have
another good year.”
The strengths for the boys will be the individual events this year but with larger numbers we look forward to putting some relays together. Looking to the jumps and the sprints for most of our points but opportunities in the distance races and other field events as well. With several returning letter winners, we will be looking for these guys to step up and lead the team this year.”
