The St. John-Hudson Tigers were one point shot of tying first place at the state cross country meet in Wamego.

For the fourth year in a row, the St. John Tiger Cross Country team traveled to Wamego for the State Cross Country Championships. The races were held at the Wamego Country Club on Saturday, October 27, 2018.

A huge crowd of people were there to cheer and line the route. The course is very challenging with runners either climbing or descending long hills the whole race.

Wind was light and the temperatures were in the mid-60’s. Eleven teams and 88 runners competed in the race. A large group of St. John supporters were there to cheer on the Tigers again this year.

The Tiger Boys team competed hard but came up one point short to the State Champion Wallace County team.

Junior A.J. Miller led the team with a 5th place finish and time of 17:39.7 his fastest time on the state course. Senior Mason Osborne finished with a 13th place finish and time of 18:08.1. Wrangler Walker finished 23rd with a time of 18:46.6. Trey Fisher finished 25th with a time of 18:53.6, his fastest time on the course. Cashe McVey finished 36th with a time of 19:12.9. Uriel Calleros finished 38th with a time of 19:15.2. Hunter Hanson finished 41st with a time of 19:22.7.

“Our boys were disappointed to come that close to winning and come up short. Winning at that level is difficult and it doesn’t take much to change the outcome. Finishing as the state runner-up is still a great accomplishment, and I am very proud of every one of our boys. They had an outstanding year. They won seven meets, league and regionals. Their only second place finishes were at Sterling to the 4A state champion Buhler and at State to Wallace County. We are really going to miss our seniors on this team Mason Osborne, Wrangler Walker, Cashe McVey, Hunter Hanson and Ethan Huston next year," said Coach Joel Delp.

“They were not only great runners but outstanding leaders on our team. I know they will continue to be an encouragement to our team as we continue the tradition next season,” Delp said.

“Our boys’ and girls’ teams have had a great season. I am proud of the kids we have on our cross country team. They are outstanding individuals, who are willing to work hard, and they do a great job of representing their school and community. We greatly appreciate all of the support that we have received from our parents, school and community this season,” Delp said.
