Emporia teen killed in crash near Branson, Mo

EMPORIA — An Emporia teen was killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash just west of Branson, Mo., authorities said.

Ace Garate, 13, died in the crash, which was reported at 10:24 a.m Wednesday on eastbound Missouri highway 76, about two miles west of Branson.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 2009 Dodge Caravan in which Garate was a passenger slowed to make a left turn and was struck from behind by a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Garate was transported by ambulance to Cox Medical Center in Branson, where he was pronounced dead. The patrol said Garate wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Four other occupants in the Dodge were transported with minor injuries to Cox Medical Center: Carlos G. Garate, 41, the driver of the minivan, Amy Garate, 37, Mercedes Garate, 64, and Alina B. Garate, 64. All were from Emporia and were wearing their seat belts, the patrol said.

The patrol identified Gideon M. Dunn, 37, of Branson, as the driver of the Toyota pickup truck.


One injured in boating accident on Lake Shawnee

TOPEKA — One person suffered serious injuries in a boating accident Wednesday night at Lake Shawnee, authorities said.

The incident was reported at 8:27 p.m. near the east boat ramp of Lake Shawnee, which is near S.E. 29th and Croco Road.

According to Shawnee County sheriff's officials, a male was cut by a boat propeller on the lake.

Medical personnel were sent to the scene, and the male was reported to have suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to sheriff's officials.
