Larned's Keady Classic held true to its traditions posting two nights on nail-biting action on Monday and Tuesday.

Larned’s Keady Classic 5-day basketball tournament closed out its second night of play on Tuesday, with St. John’s Lady Tigers mounting an incredible comeback to defeat Kinsley 49-44. On the boy’s side St. John defeated Kinsley , 80-34.

The Lady Tigers were not burning up the boards in the first half of the 5 p.m. game with Kinsley outscoring St. John by 15 points with a 26-11 lead.

The girls heated up in the second half with the Tigers scoring 17 in the third while holding Kinsley to 11. The fourth came down to the waning minutes as the Lady Tigers closed the gap scoring 21 points to Kinsley’s seven. A three-pointer by Kerisa Brown gave the Tigers the lead with under two minutes left to play.

Consistent free throw shooting from Bailey Burns accounted for six of the 21 going 11 of 15 for the game. Burns was the team’s leading scorer with 20 points. Tara Nelson found the three slot twice with a triple set of deuces and 2-4 from the line giving her 14 points on the night, Brown had 10 off a pair of three-pointers and a pair of twos.

Tarre Fisher had 3 points, Bailey Doggett 2, Bella Haskins 2.

On the boy’s side the St. John Tigers had their way with the Kinsley Coyotes with four players on the team hitting double digits, and every player on the varsity roster scoring at least once.

The Tigers wasted little time dispensing with the Coyotes outscoring them 21-5 in the first quarter, 29-11, 20-17 and 10-5.

Cole Kinnamon led the team with 16 points, Chase Fisher 14, Quincy Smith and Alexis Valenzuela both had 12.

Jorge Calleros scored 7 points, Nathan Ward 5, 4 from Jacob Milton, and three from Kevin Neri-Leon. Eddy Calleros, Triston Long and Derek Hacker hit for two each, Braden Witt hit the second of two free throws in the third for a point.

The Tiger boys advance to face Spearville at 3:45 p.m Friday. The girls will play Spearville girls at 2 p.m.

In earlier action Tuesday, Spearville defeated the Lady Mustangs 51-34, and in the boys bracket the Lancers defeated Macksville 69-36.

On Monday in the girls bracket, Hoisington topped Ellinwood 54-15, and Larned lost to Kiowa County 46-15. The winners face off on Friday in the 5:30 p.m. The losers play at the same time on Thursday.

On the boy’s side, Larned defeated Kiowa County 48-43. Hoisington again topped Ellinwood 46-34. The winners of these games play at 7:15 p.m. Friday with the losers playing at the same time on Thursday.
